Common worries

Concerned about wearing your first topper or wig? You aren’t alone!! It’s very normal to have worries. Choosing to take a step away from hair loss into trying your first wig can be harder for some than others, below are some of your most common concerns answered!

Will wearing a wig or topper cause me more hair loss?

No, wigs and toppers won’t typically cause further hair loss. They do cover parts of your existing hair whilst being worn, but the caps are very breathable and allow air to circulate to your hair underneath. They can be removed in the evenings and to sleep and so your natural hair has plenty of time to breathe!

Worried about clips pulling your hair? They are pressure sensitive and very gentle. I sometimes alternate which clips I use from day to day to give certain areas a break, but this isn’t necessary for most. The clips are pressure sensitive and as the weight of the hairpiece is distributed around the cap, they don’t pull down on the hair at all and usually feel very lightweight.

It can be helpful to measure your area of thinning and go slightly bigger with the cap, then you won’t be clipping into areas of sensitivity.

Additionally, I found that after I started wearing toppers, my stress relating to my hair reduced significantly, so my shedding also slowed a lot too!

Will my wig or topper be secure or could it fall off?

I get this question constantly! It’s very windy here in the UK and my topper has NEVER budged!

Toppers have clips and combs to secure down, and wigs can be secured either with clips and combs, velvet or silicone wig grips or tape/glue, meaning that with the correct fit your wig will stay nice and snug while you move around.

Will other people notice that I’m wearing a wig?

This was my number one concern when first looking at hairpieces!

I think this is due to spending so long being hyper aware and self conscious of your own hair, that any minor change is so noticeable to you, and so you assume it is for other people too.

I can tell you for sure that nobody around you is looking at your hair in the same way you are, and the vast majority of people think of amazon synthetics when you say the word ‘wig’, they have no idea such realistic options exist.

Within the space of a week I went from crippling anxiety that everyone was looking at my hair and

What if I buy the right option for me now and my hair loss changes?

It can be good to consider initially if your hair loss is rapidly changing or if it is fairly stable, this way you can think about what kind of option will work for you at least in the short run.

It is normal for your hair and needs to change over time though, and there is a great secondhand wig and topper market to sell on your piece to swap out for a new one, so don’t let the added worry of your hair changing deter you too much!

Over the last three years of wearing toppers I’ve gone from wearing smaller base size 7x7”, to 8x8” to 9x9” as my hair has changed, and each topper I’ve owned has been a learning experience for what I would like out of the next one. Toppers and wigs are a huge investment so its totally normal to want to make yours last as long as possible, perhaps sizing up a little or opting for something slightly longer if you want to grow your hair out could work best for you.
